 National Communications System

The Government Emergency Telecommunications Service (GETS) is a White House-directed emergency phone service provided by the National Communications System (NCS) in the Information Analysis and Infrastructure Protection Division of the Department of Homeland Security. GETS provides emergency access and priority processing in the local and long distance segments of the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). It is intended to be used in an emergency or crisis situation when the PSTN is congested and the probability of completing a call over normal or other alternate telecommunication means has significantly decreased.

 Ready America/Ready Business/Ready Kids

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security promotes individual emergency preparedness through the Ready Campaign and Citizen Corps as part of a broader national effort conducted by the Department's Preparedness Directorate. Ready is a national public service advertising campaign produced by The Advertising Council in partnership with Homeland Security. The Ready Campaign is designed to educate and empower Americans to prepare for and respond to emergencies, including natural disasters and potential terrorist attacks.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Ready Campaign has released three new demonstration videos designed to highlight the specific steps older Americans, individuals with disabilities and special needs, and pet owners should take to prepare for emergencies.The Department of Homeland Security worked with AARP, National Organization on Disability and The Humane Society of the United States to develop these new emergency preparedness resources. The videos, available online at www.ready.gov, remind individuals to get an emergency supply kit, make a family emergency plan and be informed about the different types of emergencies while considering the unique needs of these individuals, their families and caregivers. The videos recommend seniors include any necessary prescription medications in their emergency supply kits. It encourages Americans with disabilities or special needs to create a personal support network that they can rely on during an emergency. Pet owners are advised to learn which emergency shelters in their area and/or along their evacuation route will allow pets.

Established in 1996, the New York City Office of Emergency Management (OEM) works to mitigate, and plan and prepare for emergencies; educate the public about preparedness; coordinate emergency response and recovery efforts; collect and disseminate critical information; and seek funding opportunities in support of the overall preparedness of the City of New York.

OEM's Household Preparedness Guide takes an all-hazards approach to teaching New Yorkers emergency preparedness essentials. This guide was the first created in the Ready New York suite, and it outlines steps New Yorkers can take to prepare for all disasters. The Household Preparedness Guide is a comprehensive pamphlet that may be downloaded online or received by mail by calling 311 or using the link below. The new version of languages other than English will be published in August, 2007.

 CREATE (Center for Risk & Economic Analysis of Terrorism Events)

CREATE was formed to assess the risks of terrorism, to develop tools for analyzing economic and societal consequences of terrorist attacks, and to provide guidance on investments to counter terrorism and make the nation safer.

CREATE is an interdisciplinary national research center based at the University of Southern California and funded by the Department of Homeland Security. The Center is focused on risk and economic analysis of the U.S. and comprises a team of experts from across the country, including partnerships with New York University and the University of Wisconsin at Madison.

CREATE Research Reports use computer models to analyze the risks, consequences, emergency response, and economics of terrorism. For anyone interested in risk analysis or risk management these reports provide a valuable insight into Homeland Security issues.

The Chartered Management Institute

How are other countries approaching Business Continuity? The Chartered Management Institute's report on Business Continuity Management (the eighth since 1999) reveals that many UK organizations are paying lip service to the importance of planning for disaster, but failing to make business resilience a reality.

Supported by the Cabinet Office and Continuity Forum, the 2007 survey reveals that 28 per cent of organizations were affected by extreme weather conditions in the 12 months to January 2007, an increase from less than 1 in 10 in the previous year. One in five managers (20 per cent) also said that their organization's productivity had suffered due to a ‘loss of skills’ over the past year. However, the number of managers whose organizations have a business continuity plan (BCP) covering critical areas is much lower, at 48 per cent.
